Streptococcus pyogenes is the main cause of Necrotizing fascitis or "flesh eating bacteria".
S. pyogenes is a gram positive aerobe, which is slightly capnophillic (CO2 loving). As the name suggests this bacteria is found as cocci (-coccus = round "balls"). The balls are connected in chains (strepto = chains). So under the microscope you would see little balls connected together like a pearl necklace. Each "pearl" is a cell.
It is gram positive, so it has a thick cell wall and 1 outer membrane. The organism produces a toxin which eats away at the fascii, connective titsue which connects the skin to the rest of the body. This occurs so quickly that you can literally see the flesh being stripped from the body.
